The Snow Queen

The "Splendor of the Season" owl image below is from this exquisitely illustrated retelling of the classic story "The Snow Queen" by Hans Christian Andersen. In it, an evil troll creates a mirror which reflects the bad and ugly sides of people. Shards of its glass enter a young boy, causing him to reject his loving family and best friend Gerda. Helped by kind strangers and guided by her warm heart, Gerda makes the perilous journey to rescue her friend from the icy palace of the Snow Queen. Illustrations are by Miss Clara.

November is Picture Book Month!

Picture Book Month is an international initiative to designate November as Picture Book Month, encouraging everyone to celebrate literacy with print picture books. Founder, Dianne de Las Casas (author & storyteller and fellow member of the National Storytellers Network) along with four other Co-Founders, are putting together their worldwide connections to make this happen. Every day in November, there will be a new post from a picture book champion explaining why he/she thinks picture books are important. And after November, they will feature weekly posts.

So be sure to check out http://picturebookmonth.com today!

Fundraisers

My on-going fundraiser for The Autism Society of Maine continues, giving 15% of all sales to The Autism Society of Maine when you order direct through me by order form or phone, or on-line and mention the fundraiser for The Autism Society of Maine.

The fundraiser for the Maine Farmland Trust gives 20% of all sales to this non-profit organization, Maine’s only statewide land trust focused exclusively on farmland. It is their mission to: •Protect and preserve Maine’s farmland •Keep agricultural lands working •Support the future of farming in Maine. They work with landowners, land trusts, farm groups, towns and state agencies, to identify and preserve valuable agricultural land, so that it will forever remain available for agriculture. Fundraiser applies to on-line shopping, personal shopping and events, at on all Barefoot items found at The Maine Farmland Trust Gallery in Belfast. Learn more at: www.mainefarmlandtrust.org

Fund raisers are a perfect opportunity to bring quality books into your home and help the community at the same time. You can contribute to this and other fundraisers through my Barefoot Books web-site. Please contact me if you are interested in a fundraiser for your school or group.

Thank You

And a very big Thank You goes out to everyone who contributed to my fundrasier for the FUTURE MSAD 3 Capital Campaign for the Mount View School Performing Arts Center. They had set out a five year plan to raise $500,000 and in just seventeen months, they were able to raise over $624,000!!! Congratulations! I am so honored to have been a part of the campaign, as I deeply belive music, dance, theater, and art, in it's many many forms, is essential to feeding our souls... both personally as well as that of the community, and that becomes a very beautiful way of nurturing our children & our planet.

Raising Readers

I'd also like to remind folks that, through my doula practice, Mothers Moon, I am veryvery proud to be part of the raising readers program. When a mother chooses me as her doula, I get to present her with a beautiful canvas tote with a selection of books, a growth chart, and information about the raising readers program. Sometimes, I also have the chance to read a little something from them to the new child or older siblings! It's such a wonderful program! Families that schedule well-child visits with other particapating caregivers also will be given two Barefoot Books titles as well as a selection of other age/developmental stage books, from baby to toddler to pre-schooler!
